Wal-Mart Vote Postponed

Council will decide Abrams-Forest zoning on Nov. 9

The last step to clear the way for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter on the corner of Abrams Road and Forest Lane was supposed to be decided at the Oct. 26 city council meeting. But residents will have to wait a little longer for their day in front of the council.

A neighbor paid a $150 fee to postpone the hearing until Nov. 9 because she could not attend the Oct. 26 hearing.

According to the city attorney’s office, state law requires that residents living within 200 feet of a proposed rezoning area be notified of any hearing and allows both opponents and the applicant to postpone the hearing one time for a two week period if a $150 fee is paid to the city.

The rezoning, approved by the City Plan Commission, has come under hot debate from area residents who believe a Wal-Mart Supercenter is the wrong way to revitalize floundering retail in the Lake Highlands area.

District 10 Councilman Bill Blaydes supports the new retail giant, and a recommended approval by city staff means that defeating the rezoning in the council chambers on Nov. 9 may prove difficult. Nonetheless, high resident turnout is expected.

Residents can obtain updates on the hearing from the Lake Highlands Area Improvement web- site (www.lhaia.org), which has pledged to provide information while retaining a neutral position in the debate.
