Retail Committee

The Retail Committee works in collaboration with area business owners, shopping center owners, property managers and leasing agents to retain and attract good retail that meets our residents’ needs. Through the Adopt-a-Corner Program, volunteers have partnered with commercial business people in their neighborhood to work specific issues. The Committee has developed a formula for new people wanting to pitch-in and help their neighborhood:

Step 1) Map the Area

  • Use the internet and city resources to find out who are the property owners
  • Call or meet with the property owners, property managers and leasing agents
  • Visit with the business owners
  • Use LHAIA tools such as the Retail Research Report and 911 Campaign Flyer to start a dialogue

Step 2) Separate the “Good Guys” from the “Bad Guys”

  • Unfortunately not all business owners and property owners have the best interest of our community in mind; therefore, it is good to know who is willing to help you
  • Call business owner meetings – open discussion of the area’s issues will generate ideas for improvement

Step 3) Focus on One Issue

  • Whether it’s beautification or crime reduction, focusing on one problem at a time will maximize the use of limited volunteer time
  • Use city resources to help: ICP officers, 3-1-1code compliance, District Attorney’s office, etc.
  • Keep a record of your efforts – written documentation provides a great visual to garner support or inspire change
